The Gran Combo took some real popular American tunes from 1969 and Latinized ‘em -- gave them a shot of boogalú and shing-a-ling. Tunes like “Aquarius” (Remember the Celia Cruz version? -- not her finest moment), “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me,” and “This Magic Moment” did not escape the Combo’s radar. Too bad you say? Maybe, but a lot of fun nonetheless. My favorite? “Build me up Buttercup” in a heavy accent that is quite endearing. Peppered throughout are a couple of straight-up Latin tunes like “Mundy Baja” and “La Rumba No Se Acabo,” both of which rock. - elW
