The caribbean groove: reggae, dub, trip hop classification embraces a diverse range of musical genres from the English and French speaking Caribbean, including Jamaican ska, reggae, dub, ragga, dancehall, etc, Haitian compas, zouk from Guadeloupe and Martinique, and calypso, soca, steel pan, parang, rapso and chutney from Trinidad & Tobago. The tripartite tradition of Trinidad's annual pre-Lenten Carnival, comprising of mas (short for masquerade), calypso (first described as "calipso" in 1900) and steel pan, which had its beginnings in the 1940s, provided the template for yearly Caribbean carnivals in Brooklyn, London's Notting Hill, Toronto, Miami and elsewhere. - John Child
